Christmas Traditions

I am a Christmas Traditionalist.

I don't like re-mixes of Christmas Carols.  Mariah Carey? Jessica Simpson? Vomit.
I prefer to stick to traditionally arranged and sung versions of the carols, thank you very much.  Bing Crosby?  The Carpenters? Yes, please.  And Christmas music plays in our house almost non-stop starting the day after Thanksgiving.

I like spending time as a family all through December reading Christmas books (which sit in a basket on our end table), looking at holiday lights, watching Christmas movies, baking and decorating cookies, going caroling, bringing cookies to friends.  As a family.

And Christmas Eve?  I don't mess around with those traditions.  You gather friends and family, have a big yummy dinner, everyone participates in acting out the Christmas story while reading verses from the Bible and singing Christmas Carols, and then there's a mini talent show, and then dessert.

Christmas Morning?  Again, no messing around here.  You all gather in Mom and Dad's bed, find where Santa signed you during the night (so you know he came), then you line up down the hall or down the stairs while one of the parents checks to make sure Santa came, you take a picture, and then rush down to see what Santa brought you.  Then, we take turns opening gifts one at a time (usually youngest to oldest) so everyone can see and appreciate.  This is followed by our morning feast and then general laziness throughout the day (movies, candy, cookies, pajamas).

This is the way it's done.

Period.

(and I wonder where J gets his stubbornness from sometimes...)

These traditions are great, but they're all from our families.
D and I started talking about Christmas traditions we want to implement in our own family.  This has me so excited!  I love Christmas and I love traditions and the idea that we get to choose our own traditions?  Oh, the possibilities!

So, dear friends, what are your favorite Christmas traditions?
What traditions stick out in your memory from Childhood?  What traditions have you done with your children that they love?  What traditions bring you together as a family?  What traditions help you remember Christ?

  1. Well, okay, I'll comment. :) It's so fun to combine the traditions from both sides, and throw in a few of your own. Some of our favorites include (in no particular order):
    - caroling on Christmas Eve
    - watching It's a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve once the kiddos are in bed
    - reading the Christmas story - 3rd Nephi on Christmas Eve and Luke 2 on Christmas morning before opening gifts
    - Christmas baking (all the fun goodies to eat and share - we have a lot of these)
    - family dinners or video chats with those far away
    - shaking presents (yes, some presents have to go under the tree as soon as it's up)
    - Christmas movies (Scrooged, Muppets Christmas Carol, etc)

Okay, that's all I really have. :) It's always fun to see what everyone does. Merry Christmas you guys!

  2. I'd say Christmas movies are probably one of the biggest traditions we have. Christmas movies I must watch during the month of December are:
    White Christmas
    Christmas Vacation
    Scrooged
    Home Alone
    Home Alone 2
    Muppet Christmas Carol
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
    Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
    Frosty the Snowman
    The Holiday
Love Actually (I have the edited version)
    A Christmas Story
    Elf
    It's A Wonderful Life
    Miracle on 34th Street
    How The Grinch Stole Christmas
This year we've added a few new Christmas movies to our collection:
    Prancer (a childhood favorite)
Mickey's Christmas Carol (the DVD also features another childhood favorite called "The Small One")

A lot of my traditions are the same as yours...since they originated from the same place :)

  3. Landon,
I'm the same way with Christmas music!

One tradition I loved growing up was on Christmas Eve we would always get new pajamas. We would put them on then go for a drive to look at lights!

  4. @Stacia - I love that idea of getting new pajamas on Christmas Eve and then driving to go look at lights!

@Kayla - What an awesome list! I am trying to build our Christmas Movie Collection - so far we have Elf, White Christmas, The Holiday and It's a Wonderful Life.

@Jennie - Caroling on Christmas Eve sounds so fun! What a great way to spread Christmas cheer! And I LOVE the idea of reading the Christmas story from the scriptures before opening presents. I am a big fan of re-directing the focus to be on our Savior's birth.

  5. One of my favorite family traditions transitioned well to married life abroad. Every year on Christmas Eve my parents would host a big soiree for people without family nearby. This is what I now associate with Christmas, the Christmas Eve fete. Well, being so far away from EVERYTHING, we are keeping the tradition alive. Our first year on the island it was a great way to meet people. Now it's just a great way to celebrate our new home and the people we have come to love and cherish as family here.

    1. I love this idea! And I like the idea of creating a family out of those around you. I think that's a tradition that I would like to adopt!
