Handprint Ornaments

I take roughly a bazillion pictures of Jackson.
And yet, I still worry that I'm going to forget or miss something.

With this being Jackson's first Christmas, I wanted to make something that would not only help capture where he is right now but that would celebrate this first Christmas.

So we made Handprint Ornaments!

Aren't they wonderful?!

You know you want to make some for yourself.
So, here's the recipe:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 7 tbsp water
  • Round cookie cutter (I used a drinking glass instead)
  • 1 drinking straw
Mix up the flour, salt and water and kneed for 10-15 minutes (you might want to add an extra tablespoon of water - the dough is a little tough).

Roll out the dough (about 1/4-1/3 inch thick) and use a cookie cutter or a glass to cut out your ornament.

Press the child's hand into the dough - the hand prints need to be pretty deep, so if the child is young, help them push their hand into the dough.

Use a straw to poke a hole into the ornament - this is where your ribbon will go later.

Bake at 200 for an hour - this will prevent puffing.

Wait for ornaments to cool and then paint with acrylic paint or modge podge and glitter.
We used acrylic paint on the hand print and then, when it dried, painted the whole ornament with modge podge and then poured glitter on it.

I'm so excited to share these with grandparents and to have one on our tree forever!

  1. Cute!!! Would it be weird if I made these after Christmas? Because we won't be back home until then.

    1. Totally not weird at all! I think any time is a great time to do these - you can make them into ornaments or just make them as keepsakes. I think I'm going to whip up another batch and do his feet, too.
