Homemade Crock Pot Apple Sauce

After our trip to Apple Hill, I had 25 lbs of apples to make stuff out of.
First up, applesauce!

Now, you all know that I'm not much of a cooker.
But since my crock pot and I have become friends of late, I figured I could handle some crock pot applesauce!

For those of you who want to make some yourself, and I would highly recommend it, here are the steps to follow along.

Peel, core, and chop up apples.  A mix of different types of apples is best.  The size of your crock pot will determine how many apples you cut up.  I cut up 16 apples for my 6 quart crock pot (and I have the blisters on my hands to prove it).  The way you chop the apples will also determine the consistency of your apples - bigger chunks, chunkier applesauce.

Toss your apples in your crock pot.
Add cinnamon sticks - I used 3.
Add 1 lemon peel - as in, use your veggie peeler to peel once around the lemon.
Add 1 tbs (max) of lemon juice.
Add brown sugar - this is subjective.  If you want sweet applesauce, add around 3 tbs.  For a more tart apple sauce, add around 1 tbs.

Cook on low for around 6 hours.  Stir about once an hour.  The applesauce will start to bubble and the apples will break down.  Stirring will help to keep the apples from sticking to the sides and bottom and also to mix the juice in with the chunky apples to help them break down too.

My 18 apples made 3 quarts of applesauce.

And this is where I kind of cheated - I've never canned anything before.  I don't know how.  But, I do know that if whatever you're canning is hot enough, the cans could self seal.  So, I ladled my applesauce into the cans and said a prayer.
And, they self sealed!
Hallelujah!

I made 2 batches of this applesauce today and it is so yummy (and it made my house smell delicious)!  And J will get to try it tomorrow - I'll be sure to share his review.

Now, go get some apples, bust out your crock pot, and make your house smell amazing with this easy and delicious crock pot applesauce!  Your friends, family and tummy will thank you.
